Celestial Cocktail #7: The Ice Giant

Celestial Cocktail #7: The Ice Giant

We all knew someone growing up whose unfortunate name made us wonder what his or her parents were thinking. I always felt this way about Uranus. This is a celestial body, the third largest in the solar system and beautifully blue in color, yet it continues to be the one planet everyone is hesitant to even mention. let alone say is their favorite. It was named by a German astronomer, Johann Elert Bode, and we do actually know what he was thinking. Since Saturn was the mythological father of Jupiter,

Monday Classics: Lion of Baltimore

Monday Classics: Lion of Baltimore

For today’s Monday Classic, I was super intrigued by a modern variation of the Manhattan cocktail found in Philip Greene’s book by the same name. I loved the idea that it followed the traditional recipe of two parts base spirit (in this case Jamaican Rum) to one part sweet vermouth, but it also included lime, orgeat, and pimento bitters. It made me think of an island version of a Manhattan, and I liked the idea of that, especially after my venture into the Tiki world with last Monday’s Sidewinder’s Fang. The

Friday Musings: North On My Compass

Friday Musings: North On My Compass

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the idea of home, and what it actually means. I’ve always associated it with a sense of comfort, security, certainty, and where I felt most like myself. For me home is North on my compass, or the thing that grounds me and guides me as I make my way through life. Celestial Cocktail #6: Encircle Me

Celestial Cocktail #6: Encircle Me

I can remember the first time I became aware of the fact that there were planets out there in space other than the one we lived on. It was a fascinating subject for me, and one that I could hardly fathom at times because of the sheer magnitude of it all. For me, there was no planet that was more captivating than Saturn, the sixth planet from the sun, second largest, and, almost without question, the most beautiful of them all. Saturn is a gas giant, much like Jupiter, so it has no solid surface, but

Monday Classics: Sidewinder’s Fang

Monday Classics: Sidewinder’s Fang

Today’s Monday Classic is the Sidewinder’s Fang, my first real venture into the world of Tiki drinks inspired by a recipe in the book Smuggler’s CoveĀ by Martin Cate. There are two gentlemen who share responsibility for introducing Tiki cocktails to the world. The first is Ernest Gantt, aka Donn Beach, a world traveller with an obsession for everything having to do with the South Pacific and the Caribbean, and the creator of the famous Tiki drink called the Zombie. He went on to open his Don
