Friday Musings: Queen Bee

Friday Musings: Queen Bee

One of my very favorite books is The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. I happen to love the movie too. For me, it’s one of the greatest stories about the impact mothers have on their children’s lives. In this particular case, the main character’s mother leaves her behind with a very abusive father, and although she returns, she dies that same day, leaving little Lily Owens completely uncertain as to whether her mother ever really loved her. Was she returning for just her things that day, or was she

Friday Musings: Things Unseen

Last night I had the great privilege of listening to Glennon Doyle Melton, author of the book Love Warrior, speak at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, the last stop on the Together Live tour. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, Together Live brings a diverse group of female speakers before an equally diverse audience to share their empowerment stories. Glennon closed the event last night by reading a love letter she’d written to the audience. In it she mentioned that her favorite

Friday Musings: Innermost Circle

I spend a lot of time thinking about inflammation. My mom had an autoimmune disorder called Schleroderma that eventually led to her death, so the topic is important to me on multiple levels. Monday Classics: Lion of Baltimore

Monday Classics: Lion of Baltimore

For today’s Monday Classic, I was super intrigued by a modern variation of the Manhattan cocktail found in Philip Greene’s book by the same name. I loved the idea that it followed the traditional recipe of two parts base spirit (in this case Jamaican Rum) to one part sweet vermouth, but it also included lime, orgeat, and pimento bitters. It made me think of an island version of a Manhattan, and I liked the idea of that, especially after my venture into the Tiki world with last Monday’s Sidewinder’s Fang. The

Friday Musings: North On My Compass

Friday Musings: North On My Compass

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the idea of home, and what it actually means. I’ve always associated it with a sense of comfort, security, certainty, and where I felt most like myself. For me home is North on my compass, or the thing that grounds me and guides me as I make my way through life. I don’t consider this to be earth-shattering, but rather I think that most of us probably look at home in a similar way. So is it a location or place then for us, in a broad sense even, like the
